Sometimes I co-run zine and film parties with my friend, Mengju Lin, as part of our joint RadioRiotGrrrl project. All RRG zine/film parties are wholly non-profit, we try our best to find accessible spaces, and all materials are provided by us, dipping into our own art material reserves for anyone and everyone to share!!

(Disclaimer: The Zine-making workshop I facilitated at the Moon required paid entry so we could rent a space to organize the session)

We run film parties when we can, but only managed to do 2 so far unfortunately. Our very first movie party was also our official chapter opening party! We screened 'The Punk Singer' - a documentary on Kathleen Hanna, who sparked the fire that fuels our RRG project!! â€‹

She is so monumental to zine culture as the original Riot Grrrl herself. We have so much to learn from her and from other womxn like her!

Our very first RRG zine party was really nice and wholesome and refreshing. As art students being conditioned by an institution to make works in consideration of its value and whether or not it can be monetizable in the art market we get bogged down, tired, frustrated with the way we make art and for me at least, this became an outlet that allowed for some semblance of fun - which I find I was never allowed to have in art school.

Not because the lecturers said I couldn't but because the system in itself structures art-making in such a way that doesn't leave room for me to feel that I can have fun with art-making. For me, RRG becomes a space that makes art fun again - creating art however I define art to be, and using whatever means I have to make art that I think is "good enough" for myself.

ZINE-MAKING WORKSHOP FOR SELF-CARE

My colleague, Aqilah Faizall, and I co-facilitated a 'Zine-making for Self-care workshop' at The Moon.

We wanted to offer folks a space and time to get attuned with zine-making as a practice for self-care.  We believe that it's a practice that can aid in grounding and expressing the self  as we find that it becomes a great tool and medium that allows us to respond to the materials naturally. We hope for our participants to familiarize themselves with materials, rely on their immediate inclination and run recklessly with their creative spirit to have fun and make art , (that they want and need), for themselves.

2020

Glorious mess at our zine workshop!

In 2022, a couple of my friends and myself got together to collaborate and organise a 2-day event and Art Market for independent businesses with a wide array of unique offerings; from yoga + tarot readings, to tattoo pop-ups. As part of this event, I co-ran a zine-making workshop for participants - an open invite to anyone who wanted or needed a space and outlet for creative self-expression!

Here are just a few of the zines made by the participants using mixed-media!

SINGAPORE ART BOOK FAIR 2022

radioriotgrrrl exhibited at the Singapore Art Book Fair in 2022 as part of the Cut, Copy, Paste Zine Exhibitor lineup curated by Thing Books.

Here, my co-conspirator and I invited a group of other independent zine-makers and artists to display/sell/share our works with the public!

In collaboration with local artist, Ila, and Singapore Art Museum; my collective, Gula Neraka, facilitated a series of zine-making sessions, where participants were encouraged to cut, tear, glue, create and re-work their creations as an enquiry into notions of self-care.

Captured here are moments from the sessions and several zines made by the participants.
